Disaster
Relief Volunteers - Hurricane Charlie, Francis, and Ivan
The sign above was on the Lutheran Disaster Relief Headquarters in Polk County (Central Florida). The logo represents an outline of Polk county and the 3 lines shows the paths of hurricanes Charlie, Francis, and Ivan. This county was hit hard by the 3 hurricanes and it was evident by all the blue tarps still on homes in this county. On April 10, 2005, 10 volunteers from Union Evangelical Lutheran Church flew to Tampa Florida and drove to the Orlando area. For 5 days they used their skills to repair 2 homes damaged by the 2004 hurricanes. Below are the volunteers with Lilly Carbo Roberts in front of her home in Fort Meade, FL. We removed damaged roofing and installed about 19 squares of shingles.
Below are the volunteers with 87 year old Edna Cheltz behind her home in Lake Wales, FL. We tore out water damaged ceilings and walls in 2 rooms and installed new drywall ceilings, paneling, and shelves. We also did some painting and on the outside we installed new aluminum facile and soffit that was blown away.
Here
are some individual pictures
of our volunteers:
We thanks all the volunteers for their hard work. Their reward was the gratitude and smiles on the owner's faces and their own self satisfaction in helping others. We make a living by what we do, but we make a life by what we give - Winston Churchill. Throughout my life, I've seen the difference that volunteering efforts can make in people's lives. I know the personal value of service as a local volunteer - Jimmy Carter Do not wait for leaders; do it alone person to person. - Mother Teresa Web
